Back On Track
Well, Ive completed the corrections to Frames 5 and 6 and they are ready for final assembly. This puts me back on track and at the point when I first discovered the issues with the frame parts.
The parts needed minor corrections and this was accomplished by gluing small strips of mahogany on the ends of some of the pieces. These strips matched the amount of shortage on the parts. Care was taken to insure that the thickness needed for the various strips was the correct amount. The strips were glued with epoxy and then the glue lines cleaned up afterwards.
Test fitting of the parts after cleanup showed the parts to be right on the measurement points of the layout board. All of the corrections occurred in areas that will ultimately be reinforced with the gussets so I am not concerned about strength. Furthermore, tests of the epoxy joint showed that the wood fails before the glue joint fails.
The following photos show the corrections to one part. This is typical of the work accomplished on the parts that needed correction. The wax paper is used to prevent the glue from sticking the part to the table. The small weight insures that the strip is flush on the sides. The strip is taped to the end of the board to keep it pressed to the end of the part while the glue cures.
And here are the two frames after refitting. They are now ready for the final stages of assembly which will include final sanding, cleanup, and other steps mentioned in one of my previous posts. The clamped wood is used to simulate the width of the stem which will be made at a later date. Now on to the other frames.
